A Beautifully Authentic Western Wedding in Northern California | Sam + Justin Steinmetz
There’s something about a Western wedding that gets me everytime.
On April 25, 2026, I had the honor of documenting Sam + Justin's Western wedding on their ranch in Brooks, CA. From their intimate ceremony set on top of a hill of one of their family's cattle pastures overlooking the Capay Valley to a reception full of cowboys, cowgals and tons of fun, their wedding day was a beautiful reflection of their love, their Western lifestyle, and the people and places that mean the most to them.
As a Northern California Western wedding photographer, these are the days I love photographing most, not just because they are beautiful, but because they are deeply unique and personal.
A Wedding That Felt Like Them
One of my favorite things about Western weddings is that they don’t have to look a certain way.
They can be elegant. They can be laid-back. They can be surrounded by horses and ranch land. They can include boots, hats, family traditions, and all the little details that make a wedding feel like you.
Everyone getting ready under one roof of their ranch home, a first-look with the bride's grandfather, and an intimate ceremony up on the top of the hill with their cows on a windy, brisk spring day.
And honestly, those personal details are some of my favorite things to photograph.
The Moments I Love Most
Of course, I’m there for the big moments. The ceremony, the first kiss, the portraits, the first dance.
But I’m always watching for the little things, too.
The way your parents looks at you as you walk down the aisle.
Your best friend fixing your veil.
The laugh you share with your new husband when something doesn’t go quite according to plan.
The people you love hugging you a little tighter than usual.
Those are the photographs that bring you right back to the day.
Sam and Justin's wedding day was filled with love and laughter, but one of the moments I know they will always remember, and I have photos to prove it, was when the cows decided to crash their ceremony! I just love the excitement shown on Sam's face!
Golden Hour on the Ranch
And then there’s golden hour.
I will forever encourage my couples to sneak away for a few minutes during sunset. Not only does the light make for some pretty incredible portraits, but it gives you a chance to step away from the craziness of the day and just be together.
No guests. No timeline. No distractions.
Just the two of you, soaking in the fact that you’re married.
For Sam and Justin, the chilly, cloudy weather forced us to sneak away for their golden hour portraits a little early, but we still made the best use of the time. Sam and Justin raise bucking bulls, so the bulls were especially important to include in their portraits.
