Branding Season in Big Sky Country
Back in June, while we were in Montana, we had the privilege of spending a few hours capturing one of the most iconic traditions of western life. A good ol' family cattle branding. There’s something about branding season that feels timeless. The smell of dust and sagebrush in the air, the steady hum of cattle, the quick rope work, and the laughter shared between neighbors and friends. It all comes together to tell a story that’s bigger than just the day itself, but that's exactly what I set out to capture.
This particular branding was set against the wide-open Montana sky, where the horizon seems to stretch on forever. The sun was hot, the cattle strong, but family and friends worked side by side, carrying on a way of life that’s been handed down for generations.
What I loved most about photographing this branding was the blend of grit and grace. There’s the intensity of the work to be done, but also quieter moments. Kids watching and learning and momma's holding their toddlers while getting right in there to deworm the calves.
Photography at events like this is never just about documenting. For me, it’s about honoring a tradition and capturing the heart of the people who live it every day. The details matter. The weathered leather, the dust trails in the air, the way the light catches the silhouette of a rider against the mountains. It’s these small details that bring the story to life.
Montana has a way of making everything feel bigger and more beautiful, and this branding was no exception. I’m grateful I was trusted to preserve these memories, and I hope the images serve not only as a record of the day but also as a piece of western heritage to be cherished for years to come.
